Abstract

The Internet is the largest platform for application delivery today, but building scalable Web applications for the global audience is hard. The problem of satisfying the constraints of starting small to minimize initial investments but also adopting an architecture with the potential to allow future growth in the number of users and the complexity of the service does not have an immediately obvious or boiler-plate solution. This dissertation investigates the described problem and proposes solutions which are based on data partitioning techniques, with the focus on introduction of a new cache server designed for modern multi-core CPUs, offering an expanded metadata model for cached records. In order to make use of the new cache server, it also proposes new Web application patterns. The dissertation contains an analysis and evaluation of the introduced models and a comparison with previously available solutions.

Abstract (croatian)

Internet je danas najveća platforma za posluživanje aplikacija, ali izrada skalabilnih aplikacija na Webu za globalnu publiku je teško. Problem istovremenog zadovoljavanja ograničenja malog inicijalnog ulaganja u platformu ali istovremenog usvajanja arhitekture sa potencijalom dozvoljavanja budućeg rasta broja korisnika i složenosti usluge nema očito ili dobro definirano rješenje. Ova disertacija istražuje opisani problem i predlaže rješenja bazirana na tehnikama raspodjeljivanja podataka, sa fokusom na uvođenje novog poslužitelja priručne memorije koji je prilagođen modernim višejezgrenim procesorima i koji implementira prošireni model metapodataka za priručno pohranjene zapise. Za optimalno korištenje novog poslužitelja priručne memorije, predloženi su novi obrasci za izradu aplikacija na Webu. Disertacija sadrži analizu i ocjenu novih modela i usporedbu sa prethodno dostupnim rješenjima.
