Abstract

Zbirka bajki Priče iz davnine Ivane Brlić-Mažuranić jedno je od najprevođenijih djela hrvatske književnosti. U ovom će se radu analizirati engleski prijevod Croatian Tales of Long Ago Fanny Susan Copeland iz 1924. U prvom dijelu rada dat će se sažet pregled tumačenja bajke kao žanra te pregled pristupa umjetničkome izričaju I. Brlić-Mažuranić. Osobitost autoričina izričaja predstavlja uporaba arhaizama, dijalektizama, neologizama i poetizama te glagolskih oblika koji su u suvremenom hrvatskom jeziku rijetki i iskazu daju arhaičan prizvuk. U radu će se prikazati stilska vrijednost glagolskih oblika, imena i neologizama u izvorniku. Cilj je razmotriti kojim se prijevodnim strategijama koristilo u prevođenju na engleski jezik, čemu će prethoditi pregled prijevodnih strategija, u prvome redu onih koje se odnose na dječju književnost. Dakle istražit će se stilska vrijednost glagolskih oblika u hrvatskome tekstu, prijevodne inačice u engleskome te korištene prijevodne strategije. Potom će se analizirati prijevod imena likova koja potječu iz slavenske mitologije i hrvatske usmene predaje, a odraz su njihove identifikacije. Uz prijevodna rješenja na engleskome jeziku analizirat će se i primijenjene prijevodne strategije prema klasifikaciji Thea Hermansa (1988) – preuzimanje, transkribiranje, zamjenjivanje ili prijevod. Razmotrit će se i stilska vrijednost neologizama te prijevodne strategije koje se na njih odnose, prema kasifikaciji Petera Newmarka (1988). Analizom dvaju tekstova i prijevodnih strategija usporedit će se stil izvornika i engleske inačice.

Abstract (english)

Croatian Tales of Long Ago by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić is one of the most translated works of Croatian literature, and this paper will analyze the English translation by F. S. Copeland from year 1924. In the first part of the paper I will give a brief overview of the interpretation of the fairy tale as a genre and an overview of the approaches to Ivana Brlić-Mažuranićʼs artistic expression. A special feature of the authorʼs expression is the use of archaisms, dialectisms, neologisms nad poetisms, as well as verb forms that are rare in contemporary Croatian and give the text an archaic flavour. The stylistic value of verb forms, names and neologisms in the source text will be presented in the paper and the translation strategies that were used in the English translation will be analysed. This will be preceded by an overview of translation strategies, primarily those frequently employed in childrenʼs literature. The focus of the analysis will be the stylistic value of verb forms in the Croatian source text and their translation equivalents in the English translation as well as the translation strategies used in the target text. The translation of the names of the characters from Slavic mythology and Croatian oral tradition which reflect charactersʼ identity will then be analyzed. Along with translation solutions in English, the applied translation strategies will be analyzed according to the classification by Theo Hermans (1988) – taking over, transcribing, replacing or translating. The stylistic values of neologisms and the translation strategies that apply to them, according to the classification by Peter Newmark (1988), will also be considered. Comparative analysis of the two texts will be conducted to compare the style of the original and the English translation and discuss the effects of the translation strategies used in the target text.
