| Abstract | This thesis presents a corpus analysis of the lexeme ‘Frankenstein’, which has been around for more than 200 years. Initially being a character in Mary Shelley’s 1818 gothic novel, a human-like monster created in the laboratory of Victor Frankenstein, the lexeme has survived many linguistic and cultural changes, but sustained, if not increased, its popularity. The first paragraph of the thesis has to do with the reception of the novel and its contemporariness. The next chapter discusses the interrelationship between language and culture, and how it played a significant role in the lexeme’s usage and modification. In the third chapter, metaphor and polysemy are presented as the language mechanisms which are closely connected to the lexeme ‘Frankenstein’ and its perception. The main part of the thesis is the analysis, first introduced by the four main hypotheses, that are later confirmed and disproved. The analysis is divided into ten paragraphs, according to the ten domains represented in the table. As was seen in the examples above, ‘Frankenstein’ is used in many different contexts, describing a plethora of things, notions, and ideas. Its metaphorical richness and ambiguity have led to it being used not only in popular culture, but in official research files, political speeches, government institutions etc. The conventionalized meaning that Frankenstein is the monster has only added to the lexeme’s popularity and widespread usage. Given the fact that we live in an era of various technological booms, medical breakthroughs, and political turmoil, one can expect the usage of the lexeme to only be increased as time passes by. |
| Abstract (croatian) | Ovaj rad predstavlja korpusnu analizu leksema 'Frankenstein' koji postoji više od 200 godina. Budući da je u početku bio lik u gotičkom romanu Mary Shelley iz 1818., čovjekoliko čudovište stvoreno u laboratoriju Victora Frankensteina, leksem je preživio mnoge jezične i kulturološke promjene, ali je održao, ako ne i povećao, svoju popularnost. Prvi odlomak diplomskog rada odnosi se na recepciju romana i njegovu suvremenost. Sljedeće poglavlje govori o međuodnosu jezika i kulture te o tome kako je on odigrao značajnu ulogu u korištenju i modificiranju leksema. U trećem poglavlju prikazani su metafora i polisemija kao jezični mehanizmi koji su usko povezani s leksemom 'Frankenstein' i njegovom percepcijom. Glavni dio diplomskog rada je analiza u koju su najprije uvedene četiri glavne hipoteze koje su kasnije potvrđene i opovrgnute. Analiza je podijeljena u deset odlomaka, prema deset domena predstavljenih u tablici. Kao što smo vidjeli u gornjim primjerima, 'Frankenstein' se koristi u mnogim različitim kontekstima, opisujući mnoštvo stvari, pojmova i ideja. Njegovo metaforičko bogatstvo i višeznačnost doveli su do toga da se koristi ne samo u popularnoj kulturi, već i u službenim istraživačkim dosjeima, političkim govorima, vladinim institucijama itd. Konvencionalizirano značenje da je Frankenstein čudovište samo je pridonijelo popularnosti leksema i širokoj upotrebi. S obzirom na to da živimo u eri raznih tehnoloških procvata, medicinskih otkrića i političkih previranja, može se očekivati da će se uporaba leksema samo povećavati kako vrijeme bude odmicalo. |
